Ecuador is a democratic country since its creation as a Republic. Democracy was interrupted by military governments during its history. The current democratic period started in 1979.
On November 29th, 2007, a National Assembly was installed. Its main objective was to write a new Constitution.
The Assemble was formed by 130 people, elected September, 30th, 2007. On July, 25th, 2008 the National Assembly submitted the project test of a new Constitution.
On September, 28th, 2008, an approbatory referendum will take place.
If the project of the new Constitution doesn't obtain more than the 50% of the votes, the current Constitution will prevail.
